The Kim Family

Our Story

Reflecting on the years since 1996 when God called us to plant HMCC of Ann Arbor, we can’t help but be filled with a heart of privilege, thankfulness, and amazement at God’s faithfulness to our family and church community. We started the church in 1996 with a desire to join God in fulfilling the Great Commission by “transforming lives and transforming the world.” Since then, we have witnessed the love and power of Jesus Christ in the lives of people from all parts of our communities and world. God has done immeasurably more than we had asked or imagined (Ephesians 3:20)!

The decision to move to Asia to start HMCC of Hong Kong came through a few pivotal moments and much prayer as a family. The first key moment was when our family went to Indonesia in 2009-2010 to start HMCC of Jakarta. Toward the end of our time there, we lifted up prayers of surrender. We felt that if God asked us to come back to Asia in the future, we would be available servants. The second key moment was when God spoke to Pastor Seth through several verses in the Bible through the Books of Acts and Isaiah. As we prayed through these verses, we knew that God was making His heart known to us about wanting us to “ripple out” beyond Ann Arbor to reach the world, and how Hong Kong would be a key, global city to influence Asia. The last key moment was when our kids came to their own conviction about Hong Kong. It was important that our kids were a part of the decision-making process, and that God spoke to them as well. After months of prayer and family devotions, God placed it on their hearts to go to Hong Kong. This is when we knew that we, as a family needed to move forward in faith.

Support Information

We want to thank everyone who supported us in the first year of the church plant (Php 1:3-5)! Your prayers for our family and financial support helped us in our transition to life and ministry in Hong Kong. No matter the amount you gave, every dollar given and prayer lifted up were used to make a difference towards the mission of life transformation. Below is a glimpse of God’s work in the first year of the church plant!

As we head into the second year of the church plant, we look forward to how God will work in and through our church to reach more people with the gospel message. Although God has been growing our church community, the majority of our members are university students or recent graduates. Given our demographics and the high cost of living in Hong Kong, our family is continually learning how to trust in God’s provisions for the second year and beyond.

One of God’s recent provisions has been in Christina finding a job! She was able to find a job as a special education teacher at the school the kids attend. Without Christina’s job, the amount our family would need to raise is $130,168. However, with this job, the kids’ tuition is covered by the school, and we will be able to cover other expenses as well.

While we are thankful for this provision, our family still has other expenses for which we need to raise funds for. As a global city, Hong Kong is one of the most expensive places to live. Currently, it is ranked as the 3rd most expensive. The bar graph below gives a comparison of living costs for a family of five in various global cities to help explain the amount we need to raise.

2016-2017 Expenses for the Kim Family
$82,516.80 pledged
of $81,000 total
27 partners pledged

Please consider partnering with us in prayer and/or with financial giving. Your investment will be used to reach more than 7 million people in Hong Kong and eventually, reach the 1.4 billion lost people in China. Already, we have witnessed people coming to know the Lord, getting baptized, and growing as disciples of Jesus Christ. Many of them are the first Christians in their families who are eager to share their faith with others. The harvest is truly plentiful here!
